Some years ago, I put the San Germán marriage register for 1759-1774 on my computer with entries David Stark and I had collected together with entries collected by Enrique Ramírez Brau and published in one of his books. I realized that the computerized version contained multiple mistakes. There were also many duplications of entries due to the fact that they were taken from different sources.

For a time I thought that the original book was no longer available, but a while ago I found that it is still in the archives of the San Germán parish. I therefore decided to go through the whole book, entry by entry, and correct the mistakes I found. I am not able to correct the computerized version directly on the computer as it was on my old computer which crashed and the backup disk did not work. For that reason I had to use a hard copy and fix that copy for future use.

As the computer version was sold to several genealogists, I have been thinking how I can get the corrections to them. There are three ways:

You can copy them from my homepage (http://home.coqui.net/uahorm at the

link SGCORRECTIONS),

Send me an e-mail so that I can attach them in WORDPERFECT in my answer, or

Write me so that I can send a hardcopy of the corrections.

I am sorry for the inconvenience I may have caused you.

When I copied the record I found that Maria de la Concepcion's name was given as

Maria de la Concepcion y Victoria, natural daughter of I(g)nacia Monserrate. I still do not know her father's name from the records I have seen, but was assured that she was Segarra and Lopez de Victoria. The couple are the maternal grandparents of Roberto Cofresí. - There are also other records were the name Maria de la Concepcion is followed by y (apellido). I have been wondering if in these cases De la Concepcion is not a last name.

MARRIAGE RECORDS FROM SAN GERMAN 1759-1774

1774 May 8 Bedes Urrutia Diego (don)

Parents: D. Diego and Da. Fermina de Urrutia, both from the Biscaya

Married to Da. Estefania de Mercado Segarra

This record gives the parents as D. Diego and Da. Fermina de Urrutia. Some descendants have been looking for Don Diego's ancestors in Spain for a long time without finding their records. The reason may be that they were looking for Urrutia which appears to be his wife's last name. The way this record is written it seems to be the logical conclusion. (D. Diego Bedes, h. l. de D. Diego y Da. Fermina de Urrutia.)

Urrutia is a prestigious surname and Diego Urrutia apparently opted to follow the old custom of selecting a prestigious maternal last name over a possibly less prestigious paternal name. I may add that the wife, Estefana Mercado Cegarra, in later documents also uses her mother's last name, Cegarra.

Finally, this records states that Don Diego came to Mayagüez when he was ten years old. It does not sya when and with whom.
