Where exactly is Vieques Island ?

Alot of people ask this question so I figured it would be nice to provide a bit of information for those who are interested.

As you see from the map above, Vieques is just off shore from the east coast of Puerto Rico. Its a one-hour ferry ride to the city of Fajardo, or a 30-minute plane ride to San Juan. St. Croix, of the US Virgin Islands, is about 40 miles ESE and visible on a clear day.

Only the central third of the island is populated. The east and west portions were occupied by the US Navy until 2003.  No, the whole island was not some sort of bombing range.  Only the extreme eastern tip several miles from any populated areas.  The ex-Navy Lands are now under the jurisdiction of the US Fish & Wildlife Service and offer some of the only untouched ground remaining in the Caribbean.  The island is about 20 miles long and 5 miles wide. Census estimates put the population at around 9000 residents.

Although Vieques has great beaches, camping and sight-seeing, big-time tourism hasn't arrived. There's a few small hotels and guesthouses catering to the few tourists who are savvy enough to find the island and prefer the tranquility. Its also a popular spot for weekenders from the main island.
