the Crew,
The story of El Faro S.E. begins with the arrival
of The Born Free to the shores of Puerto Rico .
A 44' LOA ketch by Harvey Gamage built in Maine
in 1934, mahogany on oak, bronze everywere,
brittish electronics and enough stories about voyages
and adventures to write a book.
A family of sailors and fishermen find it , purchase
it and take it to her new home, Santa Isabel.
Here a new sailor is born, and with it the vision
of a venture that, althogh meant for business, became
the source of adventure, hard work and every time
the satisfaction of another mission accomplished.
In 1984 the Born Free , on dry dock, becomes the
victim of arson. In 1988 El Faro S.E. gets permission
for Charter operation.
There are memories of the Born Free that still
live in the minds of those who knew it and for as long
as they survivethe Born Free will still be seen
sailing the deep blue waters of the Caribbean.
