Consider:
Travel Time* One day sailing
from El Faro S.E. (Sta Isabel) to east coast Puerto Rico.
One day sailing from east coast
P.R. to Culebra Island (arriving in the evening), staying overnight at
Ensenada Honda bay (Culebra harbor), one day to St. Thomas (Charlotte Amalie,
arriving in the evening), and from there one day for any place you want
to visit. To St. Croix it is also a full day sail. A car -or scooter- can
be rented in any of these islands so you can do your sight-seeing in "fast
forward".
Food Supplies* All purchases should be made in P.R. except perishables, Culebra lacks variety, St. Thomas has good variety, excellent quality and some very high prices, except wine and liquor. You may find a good buy in Jewelry and electronics (they claim to have 125 jewelry stores in one street!); in Tortola (british) you'll find mostly european articles, Dunhill or 555 cigarettes at $11 per carton, french cabernet sauvignon: $4. a bottle. They do not have water for sale in these islands, except St. Thomas ($0.08 per gal.). A day at a slip in a marina averages $40. They have hot showers, restaurants, food market, and most tourist wants.
Charter rates* Once you submit
your plan to El Faro and it is accepted you will be quoted a price, but
beforehand you can estimate it yourself. Here is how: Leaving from
El Faro S.E. , returning to same port:
Choice of vessel: Molly-C
or Serendipity
One day sail (8 AM to 9 PM)....................$350.
Two Day Sail (2 days, 1 night)..................$500.
Two day Sail (2 days, 2 nights).................$600
Additional day (and night)........................$150
These prices are for a party of
up to six people, include captain and first mate.
Choice of vessel: Venture:
Other Expenses* If you are
flying from abroad it pays to take a look at Travelocity.
It is easy to browse and find good prices. A ride from the airport to El
Faro S.E. and back can be arranged, so let's keep in touch!
Local shopping can be done once
you have moved in, prices are similar to the U.S.
Health* If you are serious
about doing this you better be in good shape; one to three days sail, anybody
can do that; but if you want to walk the beaches, swim those coral reefs,
dive to get some lobsters and still be able to pull the anchor up, let's
try ten push-ups in the morning... for starters.
Don't forget your prescription
drugs, a spare pair of glasses, (contact lenses will come off if you go
swiming). In case of emergency we can allways rely on the Coast
Guard, take a look.
