1898
This first specimen is a very, very rare Puertorrican pattern ( very few known ) The shield in the reverse is a cuban shield, not the puertorrican one. Not much is known about this coin since it was a late effort ( 1890 ) to introduce a local fractional coin system. At the time (1885 - 1894) coins were being countermarked in an effort to maintain coins within PR as they were being sent to foreign concerns, probably for their silver content. At any rate there was a severe coin shortage at the time. This fractional coin system was a late effort due to the introduction of the provincial coins in 1895 and 1896. These, in turn, were substituted by US coinage after the 1898 war.
