Tortuguero Lagoon Reserve |
Tortuguero Reserve has the largest freshwater lagoon in Puerto
Rico. The lagoon and surrounding wetlands are habitat for several species of
carnivorous plants, caimans and other rare or endemic fauna and flora. This
natural reserve is located in the karstic area in the north of Puerto Rico.
The Reserve is being threatened by the construction of housing projects
and shopping malls, as well as the extraction of siliceous sand and
subterranean water. These activities interrupt the superficial draining
